Heavy metal levels in surface waters from a tropical river basin, Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v32i4.5231 Biological Sciences
Aprile, Fábio Marques; INPA; Bouvy, Marc; IRD.
Monthly, the distribution and enrichment of heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Pb and Zn) in surface waters were examined at eight sampling sites, in Tapacurá river (Pernambuco State, Brazil), from March 1997 to December 1998 and from June 2005 to March 2006. On average, metal levels ranged from 0.30 to 4.22 for Fe; 0.02 to 1.09 for Mn; 0.001 to 0.014 for Cu; ≤ 0.006 to 0.029 for Pb and 0.003 to 0.020 for Zn, all in mg L-1. Heavy metals presented a great heterogeneous horizontal distribution, with hotspots in municipal and agricultural areas. The enrichment factor (EF) and the potential contamination index (Cp) indicated moderate to severe contamination by Cu and Zn. The results pointed the potential pathways of trace metals via the transport of soil for the...

Microbial community structure in the sea surface microlayer at two contrasting coastal sites in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Joux, Fabien; Agogue, Helene; Obernosterer, Ingrid; Dupuy, Christine; Reinthaler, Thomas; Herndl, Gerhard J.; Lebaron, Philippe.
In an attempt to compare the microbial community structure between the sea surface microlayer (SML) and subsurface waters (SSW), we determined the enrichment factors (EF: the ratio of abundance or activity in the SML to abundance or activity in SSW) of 13 biological parameters. Samples were taken at 2 contrasting coastal sites in the Mediterranean Sea, corresponding to a high (Barcelona, Spain) and low (Banyuls-sur-Mer, France) urbanized area. Principal component analysis showed that temporal variability was much higher at Barcelona than at Banyuls, and that the characteristics of the SML and SSW samples were more closely related at Barcelona. At both sites, the SML was weakly enriched in heterotrophic bacteria (on average 1.1-fold), Synechococcus spp. (on...

Seasonal changes of chemical contamination in coastal waters during sediment resuspension ArchiMer
Bancon-montigny, Chrystelle; Gonzalez, Catherine; Delpoux, Sophie; Avenzac, Muriel; Spinelli, Sylvie; Mhadhbi, Takoua; Mejri, Kaouther; Hlaili, Asma Sakka; Pringault, Olivier.
The potential of remobilization of pollutants is a major problem for anthropogenic ecosystems, because even when the anthropogenic source of pollution is identified and removed, pollutants stored in sediments can be released into the water column and impact pelagic communities during sediment resuspension provoked by dredging, storms or bottom trawling. The objectives of the present study were to assess the changes observed in the chemical composition of the water column following resuspension of a polluted marine sediment and the consequences for the chemical composition of adjacent marine waters according to season. For that purpose, an experimental sediment resuspension protocol was performed on four distinct occasions, spring, summer, fall and winter,...

Spatial and temporal variations in trace metal concentrations in surface sediments of the Marennes Oleron Bay. Relation to hydrodynamic forcing ArchiMer
Strady, Emilie; Kervella, Stephane; Blanc, Gerard; Robert, Serge; Stanisiere, Jean-yves; Coynel, Alexandra; Schaefer, Joerg.
Sediments quality assessment is of priority concern to provide a comprehensible overview of ecological and chemical state of an ecosystem. The Marennes-Oleron Bay, hosting the largest oyster production in France, is influenced by the historic polymetallic pollution of the Gironde Estuary. Despite, management efforts and decreasing emissions in the Gironde watershed, Cd levels in oysters from the bay are close to consumption limit (5 pig g(-1) dw. EC no. 466/2001). In this context, the aim of the study was to assess the priority metal (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd, Hg, Pb and Th) concentrations in sediment within the Bay, by investigating spatial and temporal distribution variations and the role of hydrodynamic forcing. For that we selected three sites (east,...
